The Toe Dragons will represent the Backyard Conference in the 2015 Backyard Cup Finals after dispatching the 2015 Founder's Cup winning Iceholes in just four games. It has not been an easy road for the club as they have endured thier share of adversity during thier inaugural playoff run. Some unpredictable circumstances have taken place forcing the Dragons to dig deep time and time again.
A couple of serious injuries to Jono Sullivan and club co-founder Wesley Binedell have left them on the sidelines for the rest of the season and depleted the defensive core of the club. The red and blue have adjusted by shifting prolific shooter Maxim Kaluzhny to the point and primarily playing with a 4 man rotating stable of dmen that consists of tough rookie Joel Jefferies, Co-Captain Jordan Hills and West Auckland Admiral Justin Daigle alongside Max.
Up front the Dragons have applied the forecheck with great success and rookie Adam Laycock has been a bright spot as the 18-year old has recorded points in each of the Toe Dragons playoff wins.
The biggest surprise during the run has been the success of goaltender Scott Collins who after posting mild numbers during the regular season has been able to find his legs in the playoffs. The brass has taken notice as they have stayed with "the hot hand in the pipes" and it has paid dividens with a finals berth. Collins has posted a sparkling 5 - 1 record with a 3.11 GAA along with a .887 % save ratio and even adding 2 assists.
The next challenge for the Toe Dragons will be continuing this ride and facing off against either a defending Champion or thier expansion partners ... with Game 5 of the Frozen Lake Conference Finals looming you can bet the Dragons will be watching.
The 2015 Backyard Cup Final kicks off March 2nd @ 8pm LIVE from The Botany Forum.
