Les Cones vs Les Bucherons
Les Bucherons came out in force for the opening night of the FHL, you wouldn’t have guessed that they are the reigning wooden spoon champions with the performance they put on. The cones lived up to their name and provided several cones on the ice for the lumberjacks to skate around while getting plenty of genos. 2016 FHL heart throb Darcy Keane notched the first goal of the season early on the piece, ending up with a total of 4 goals and 1 assist. But it wasn't just Keane lighting it up, fellow BHL reserve Alain provided solid support at the back and tallied 3 assists. The other big come back of the night was Jeremy Allen who came out firing getting himself a hatrick. The reset has revived the Bucherons and they are looking like a force to reckon with this season! The cones struggled all night, only putting 9 shots on net; they were missing their top prospect Rachel Park but managed to get 2 points on the board. Was this the performance of the season for the Bucherons, or are they still warming up? Can they keep up the offensive master class without their BHL reserves? We will find out in the coming weeks.
Les Coqs vs Tip Insects
The Coqs were looking to come out strong with only losing 1 game in the 2016 regular season. However they came out limp giving the tip insects the early lead, they managed to get one back only for another Insect to get his tip in at the end of the first. The Insects got another in the second and held on to their 3-1 lead until the final whistle. The Coqs had plenty of scoring chances but couldn't get past Greg and his best friend the post. Greg turned into a brick wall and wasn't letting anything in, even when he faced 6 skaters at the death when the Coqs pulled their goalie. The Insects showed some solid defence and had an urge with their skating to get to the puck first which created opportunities for them. The Coqs lacked defence in the early stages of the game giving the Insects plenty of chances but managed to clean it up in the late game. They created some good attacking opportunities but couldn't pull the trigger.
Sauce vs Fishsticks
The reigning champions and villains, the Sauce were looking to make a statement in their first game of the season. The Sauce were held scoreless in the first period as the Fishsticks were going toe to toe with them. However the scoring opened up in the second period with two quick genos from what could be the big three of the FHL, the power line, Ravil Gabaydulin, Kyle Kainiak and Ty Ireton. The Fishsticks managed to get back into the game with their captain Callum leading the charge, winning a faceoff and hitting the back of the net all on his own. The third period was one way traffic and the Avondale Square Gardens was covered in Sauce, two more goals coming from the Sauces ‘Big Three’. Mike Tobin managed to play through an injury and got a buzzer beater at the end, Fishsticks going down 5-3 to the Sauce. The early signs of the Sauce show that they mean business and want to go back to back with the FHL championship; can they keep this up all season? The Fishsticks may have gone down, but they were missing the FHL number one goal tender Lochlyn Hyde, will she keep them out?
